Ostrava (Czech Republic), January 16 – The Ostrava Days Institute accepts applications for its 12th edition. Over the course of more than 20 years, the Ostrava Days became one of the most praised and internationally acclaimed summer new music programs. OD consists of two inseparable, interconnected events: 3-weeks-long Institute with lectures, meetings and workshops, and 10-days-long Festival with almost a hundred of pieces performed at approximately 15 events taking place at various and often architectonically or historically unique venues.
Being focused mainly on working with orchestra, Ostrava Days has been effortlessly giving chance to young, emerging composers to work in the environment consisting of professionals in the field of new music. Every participating composer has their own piece performed by top-notch musicians from all over Europe and also overseas, with these pieces being programmed next to the “classics” of the genre (such as Iannis Xenakis, Morton Feldman and others) and also their peers. During the 3-week-long period, the resident-students of the Institute get a chance of attending lectures and individual meetings with almost 30 composers and also conductors and performers from new music field. Alongside the visiting ensembles and soloists, there are two resident orchestras at the core of Ostrava Days: Ostrava New Orchestra – ONO, and Ostravská banda.
The 21-days duration of Ostrava Days creates a close community of young and recognized composers and musicians. They interact not only professionally – attending lectures, seminars, discussions and participating in rehearsals and performances – but also socially. The use of English as the only language, the proximity of all the venues, and the joint eating places, create a sense of community. The duration of Ostrava Days allows participants to develop one-on-one relationships, which we hold essential for ideas to emerge, both musical and artistic.
The number or residents accepted at Institute is limited (usually there are approx. 30 students-residents). Among them, there are not only students of different academies worldwide, but also graduates, PhD researchers and even professors of composition who are keen on learning new things and meeting new people in the field. Application deadline is March 15, 2023. Scholarships are available.
